Galwegians Women Launch ‘Bring-A-Buddy’ Initiative

Whether you are a friend of a squad member or simply a newcomer and are interested in taking up the sport, Galwegians’ Bring-A-Buddy initiative will hopefully see a good number of new faces at Crowley Park on Thursday night.

All seems to be right in the world of Irish Women’s rugby at the moment. The national squad is busily preparing for the forthcoming IRB Women’s World Cup in London, while the provincial panels are commencing their preparations for this year’s Interprovincial campaign, which will see the best players in the country fight for the national title over a four-match series.

The popularity of the women’s game is at a record high with over 2,000 players currently registered nationwide. Needless to say it will be hard to escape the growing focus on women’s rugby over the coming years – so why not join in?

The largest women’s rugby club in Connacht is Galwegians and they are launching their premier recruitment initiative this week in a bid to increase numbers for the forthcoming All-Ireland League season.

‘Wegians are asking their current squad members to ‘bring a buddy’ to club training on Thursday evening (August 12).

The concept of the Bring-A-Buddy system is to invite new players to try the game for themselves in a commitment-free and fun environment, where at least half of the participants will be new to the game.

However, anyone who may be interested in joining the team, or killing their curiosity, who has no links with the squad, is more than welcome to attend.

The session will be under the auspices of strength and conditioning coach Emer O’Dowd, who takes the reigns again following her fantastic pre-season work last year, and will be followed by an informal gathering in the clubhouse.

The Galwegians Women’s squad’s Bring-A-Buddy session commences at 7pm at Crowley Park on Thursday.
