‘A Day For Shane’

Former Garryowen stalwart Shane Geoghegan was remembered in Limerick this week with the unveiling of a plaque in his memory in Dooradoyle and ‘A Day For Shane’ culminating in a Munster XI taking on Niall Quinn’s Sunderland at Thomond Park.

A plaque in memory of the late Shane Geoghegan was unveiled in the offices of Limerick County Council in Dooradoyle, Limerick last Monday.

The offices are adjacent to Garryowen FC where Shane was an extremely popular and committed rugby captain.

Shane’s death resulted in a huge outpouring of emotion and support throughout the country.

Prior to the unveiling, Richard Butler, Chairman of Limerick County Council, addressed Shane’s Parents and the large gathering of family and friends.

In affording the highest accolade that can be bestowed on a citizien, Mr. Butler chronicled Shane’s life as a sportsman and his positive role in the community.

He also outlined the positive response and success of the Shane Geoghegan Trust.

The Shane Geoghehan Trust was established to foster and encourage sports and sports related activities in the community.

A series of events have already were held in the Kilteragh area yesterday, culminating in Niall Quinn’s Sunderland AFC taking on a Munster XI at Thomond Park last night.
