Galway Girls Enjoy Tag Blitz

A blisteringly hot summer’s day saw two of the biggest girls primary schools in Galway – Scoil Ide and Scoil Rois – join together for a Tag rugby blitz, which was kindly hosted on the grounds of St. Enda’s Secondary School in Salthill.

Over 300 girls aged between 9 and 11 took part in the one day event which saw each team represent a different country from around the world.

Participation was not limited to traditional rugby countries and there were costumes representing countries as far flung as Albania, Japan, Botswana, Cyprus and Macedonia to name just a few.

The standard of play was very high with both schools receiving extensive coaching from Connacht Rugby’s Wendy Hickey and Emer O’Dowd throughout the school year and the support and help from the schools and their teachers was invaluable in making the event a success.

The games were spread over six pitches with Community Rugby Officers from the Connacht Branch on hand to referee and offer the odd bit of onfield advice. Connacht head coach Eric Elwood was also there to lend his support.

O’Connors Centra in Salthill provided fresh fruit and drinks for all the participants after the blitz.

Commenting on a memorable day for everyone involved, Connacht Rugby’s Women’s Development Officer Wendy Hickey said: “It was wonderful to get such a great turnout and such a fabulous day, I would like to thank both schools and all the teachers and volunteers who have made today possible.

“I would like to pay special thanks to Michael O’Connor from O’Connors Centra in Salthill for kindly supplying refreshments, to Eric Elwood for coming down and helping out and to Dave O’Sullivan and St. Enda’s for the use of their facilities.”
