Queen’s Prevail Despite ‘Worst Performance’

Queen’s University made heavy work of justifying their favourites’ tag against a resilient Nenagh Ormond in Saturday’s AIB League Division 3 final, before winger Chris Quinn skated over for the match-winning try in the 79th minute.

But the result was not enough to satisfy director of rugby Robbie Moore, who had watched his Queen’s side put in some brilliant displays during the league phase.

“It was one of our worst performances of the season. We didn’t play at all this afternoon,” said the club stalwart.

“In fairness to Nenagh, their defence was good and firm. But, we butchered a lot of chances through a number of players who are Ulster Ravens standard.

“Our first objective was to achieve promotion. We did that. Then, the Ulster Senior Cup was next in our sights. We won that final against Malone last Friday week.

“Don’t get me wrong. Nenagh played very well. They made it difficult for us. There wasn’t much in it in the regular season league match. It went our way 18-13.

“But, our backs did not perform (today). Some of our passes were very, very poor. Had we lost I would have had no complaints whatsoever.”

Chris Quinn, who scored the match-winning try for the Belfast students, is already looking forward to Queen’s first ever season in Division 2 of the AIB League.

“We had some great results against Division 1 and 2 teams this year, so hopefully we can do as well when we go up next season.

“Hopefully I can stay injury free but it’s a pretty rough game and you expect to get injured now and again.

“I haven’t played a lot this year (because of injuries) and I didn’t actually expect to play again this season, so it was a real bonus personally not only to be playing again but to get the winning score.”
