Leinster Get Involved In Community Initiative

Earlier this week at Holy Cross National School in Dundrum, An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Marie Baker, officially launched an exciting new partnership between Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Leinster Rugby.

The two organisations, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Leinster Rugby, are teaming up to teach rugby skills to girls and boys throughout the county.

Over 12,000 young people, aged between 5 and 19, will directly or indirectly benefit from the programme which targets local clubs and communities throughout Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown.

This new initiative expands upon an already wide-ranging programme of sports development activities run by DLRCC including after-school programmes and community based sporting events.

As part of this one-year pilot project, a Community Rugby Officer based within DLRCC, Stephen Gore, will provide support and expertise on the ground to players, parents, coaches, volunteers and community groups.

Gore is the first Community Rugby Officer working in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, and he will work closely with coaches, at camps, with schools, on teacher education initiatives, and with rugby clubs over the next year.

The programme is initially targeting 10 schools across County Dublin and since January he has already been working with a number of second level schools and clubs.

Speaking at the launch, Cllr. Marie Baker said: “Sport is good for the individual and good for the community. I’m delighted to see the Council partnering with Leinster Rugby on this project, which will build upon the Council’s existing work to involve more young people across Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown in sporting activities.”
