Another Milestone For Aviva Stadium

As the countdown beings to the opening rugby match at Aviva Stadium in the summer, when a Connacht/Munster selection takes on a composite Leinster/Ulster side, another important milestone has been reached at the Lansdowne Road ground with the completion of work on the new pitch.

The Aviva Stadium pitch, which has been under construction since mid-February was seeded at the end of last week. The first grass shoots are expected within a matter of weeks.

The new pitch is the latest generation fibrelastic sand-based pitch on a gravel raft with a special blend of ryegrasses. The soil for the pitch is actually the original soil from the old stadium.

The new pitch has undersoil heating and an irrigation system.

On hand to mark the occasion for the Dublin 4 stadium were FAI Chief Executive John Delaney, Paul Kelly, Group Marketing Director for Aviva, and IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne.

The Aviva Stadium is due for completion and handing over to the stadium company on April 30, which is less than 40 days away. The official opening of the stadium is scheduled for Friday, May 14.
