National Referee Assessor Seminar 2009

Who ‘refs’ the ref? The assessor that’s who! Last weekend saw the National Assessors Seminar take place in Old Belvedere RFC. Forty of the top assessors from the four provinces attended this day-long get together.

Referee Development is a key part of the IRFU’s Domestic Game Strategy. Ensuring the best quality of referees for the game at each level is part of the remit of the Referee’s Assessor.

The importance of talent identification at all levels was one of the main topics at this year’s National Assessors Seminar which was headed up by Elite ERC Assessor and member of the IRFU Referee Committee Tom Aplin.

The need for accurate performance description was also on the agenda as the Assessors are tasked with ensuring consistency of performance amongst referees.

IRFU Director of Referee Development Owen Doyle and IRFU Referee Coaching and Development Officer David McHugh also presented on various topics including New Law and Interpretation.

The 40 Assessors will examine referee performance at various levels including Magners League, British & Irish Cup and AIB League throughout the season.
