IRFU President Congratulates Irish Lions

Irish Rugby Football Union President John Lyons has passed on his congratulations on behalf of Irish rugby to the 14 Irish players who were selected today for the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa this summer.

IRFU President John Lyons spoke today of the delight in the rugby community in Ireland at the historic number of Ireland players included in the 2009 British & Irish Lions touring party.

“It is wonderful news for the game in Ireland to have such a strong representation in the touring party coming on the back of this year’s historic Grand Slam,” he said.

“Coupled with the upcoming Leinster v Munster Heineken Cup semi-final which guarantees an Irish team in the Heineken Cup final, two Irish teams occupying the top two places in the Magners League, as well as the other significant progress made at underage and Women’s levels, it has added another extraordinary achievement to this season.”

The IRFU President went on to compliment the work of the many thousands of volunteers in the four provinces whose work contributes to the success of Irish rugby.

“The RBS 6 Nations Championship success and the British & Irish Lions representatives named today are a testament to the work of the thousands of volunteers, administrators, parents, coaches, teachers and players across the rugby community and these achievements are only possible because of their invaluable input.

“I would like to pass on our sincerest congratulations to the players on behalf of Irish rugby and wish them the best for the remainder of this season and the forthcoming tour to South Africa,” he added.
