Grand Slam Heroes Attend Áras An Uachtaráin Reception

President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, hosted a reception at Áras an Uachtaráin on Monday afternoon to mark the achievement of the Ireland squad in winning the RBS 6 Nations Grand Slam last month.

Members of Ireland’s Grand Slam-winning squad, team management and representatives of the IRFU were in attendance at the event in the Phoenix Park.

Congratulating the squad and management again on their wonderful triumph, President Mary McAleese said: “Already millions of words have been said and written about the 2009 RBS 6 Nations tournament and that showdown in Cardiff.

“Beyond winning, you should all know that not only did you make us proud in what you achieved but also in the way you conducted yourselves as a team and as individuals.

“Each one of you is a superb ambassador for this whole island and for its collective character.

“There was always a generosity and modesty when you spoke that added hugely to our shared pride in your sporting success and sportsmanship.”

The President continued: “Each of you in turn reminded us of where it all begins – in the heart of community with people who introduce youngsters to sport in schools and clubs week in and week out.

“We acknowledge those people also today along with the IRFU and the considerable backroom team which helped perfect the skills and fitness levels of this now historic squad.”
