Ballymoney’s Thomas ‘Toss’ Skelton really does know how to set a good example when it comes to club development! His commitment to rugby at the County Antrim club is well known but he gave a little bit extra to the club when his son Thomas junior was selected for his first game on St. Valentine’s Day.
Thomas Skelton senior and Thomas Skelton junior made their first starts alongside each other last Saturday when Ballymoney thirds took on Lurgan’s second team in Section 4 of Ulster’s Magners Junior League.
It was a very proud moment for both of them. Of course Thomas senior has got well used to tutoring ‘junior’ as they are both gainfully employed at Dalriada School where ‘senior’ is the Head.
Gordy McCandless, the Ballymoney thirds captain, was delighted with the new pairing.
“The young cub played at out-half and had an outstanding senior debut. Unfortunately we had the wrong result (31-10) on the day,” he said.
“I was surprised how considerate of old age young Thomas was – he was very careful to slow right down at times to let the old fella catch up.”
Rumour has it also that at different times Thomas jnr was heard to call out, ‘Pass Dad!’ and ‘Your man Mr. Skelton!’, as well as ‘Well done Headmaster!’
“What I do know is that it was a memorable day for the players and our club. in all three new, young players started with us and this can only be good for the future,” McCandless added.
