St. Paul’s Pupils Enjoy First Contact Session

Some pupils from St. Paul’s Junior High School in Lurgan got their first taste of full contact rugby at Lurgan Rugby Club recently.

The Year 8 group from St. Paul’s have been training with Ulster Branch Development Officer for the area, Jonny Gillespie, as part of the Youth Development project at their school, and they made the short journey up to Lurgan RFC to use the grass pitches there.

During the session, which lasted over an hour, the boys worked on warm-up exercises, general movement games and an introduction to tackling.

Jonny said: “The boys put everything into the full contact scenarios and really seemed to enjoy themselves despite the constant drizzle and awkward conditions.

“Although it was their first taste of contact rugby, there were some very impressive skills on show.”

St. Paul’s Junior High School are currently preparing for a Year 8 development day coming up next week and should now be well able to compete with the other schools in the area.

Well done to all involved and keep it up!
