The new gym at the Sportsground, which was opened before Christmas by IRFU President John Lyons, is being used by players across all grades.

The gym is also available for other teams and codes to hire and details are available from the Connacht Branch offices on tel: 091-561568.

Connacht fitness advisor Kevin Cradock says that the facility is a huge addition to sport in Galway and is comparable with facilities available to the top rugby teams anywhere.

Up until now, the Connacht players had been training in a gym which was 50 square metres but the new facility is almost 700 square metres.

Craddock said: “It’s a dream come true from our persepective. We’ve enough room to practice lineouts, do speed training as well as many other rugby specific drills and skills sessions indoors, while it is also conducive to other sports.”

The new facility was designed after viewing several top class training facilities all over the world and was made specific to the needs of Connacht Rugby.

“We looked at a lot of different facilities in England, Wales and Australia, including Manchester United, Arsenal, ACT Brumbies, Queensland Reds, Blue Bulls, Natal Sharks, Wigan Athletic, Llanelli Scarlets, Bradford and St. Helen’s.”
