Bective Get Rid Of Their Winter Whiskers

Plenty of club and provincial players are feeling the cold this week as they get used to life with a moustache. For example, for the entire month of November, some members of Bective Rangers FC looked like the cast from a (bad) western as they went unshaven in support of the Stuart Mangan Appeal.

Backing the ‘Movember’ charity cause was one of the fundraising events being organised by Bective Rangers to raise money for the Stuart Mangan Appeal and was entered into with great gusto by all at Dublin 4 club.

The players and some club officials had their ‘shave off’ at the clubhouse over the weekend. You can see the ‘before’ photo above!

Stuart is a cousin of one of Bective’s club members, Eamonn Sayers. A graduate of Rockwell College and UCC, he was playing in a club game in London in April when a simple tackle left the 24-year-old with a devastating spinal injury.

In global terms, Stuart’s injury is the most catastrophic rugby injury seen in recent years. Categorised as C1 Complete, he is completely paralysed from the neck down and unable to breathe without a ventilator.

Stuart will require 24-hour medical care for the rest of his life. Tragically, medical experts have described his spinal injury as the worst to occur in sport.

At times like this, the rugby fraternity has to come together and make a special effort and that is exactly what Bective have done.

The players and members of Bective are aware of their good fortune and health, and this season they will take on many avenues of fundraising for this appeal with great commitment. Well done to all involved and keep it up!

Those interested in adding to the fundraising can send cheques to the Stuart Mangan Trust, 23 Avoca Park, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, or donations can be made through AIB Bank, Pearse Square, Fermoy, Co. Cork. Account Number: 17569101, Sort Code: 93-60-81.

Interested parties can also donate online at www.stuartmangan.org.
