IRFU Referee Department Gives ELV Briefing

The IRFU Referee Department, headed by Owen Doyle, gave a detailed media briefing yesterday on the implementation of the ELVs in Irish Rugby.

The briefing, which took place in Old Belvedere Rugby Club, was part of the ongoing IRFU education process to introduce the ELVs in Irish Rugby.

The briefing was conducted by former international referees Owen Doyle (IRFU Director of Referee Development) and David McHugh (IRFU Referee Coaching & Development Manager).

In total thirteen ELVs will be trialled here this season.

The purpose of the briefing was to assist the media in understanding the practical implementation of the ELVs from the perspective of refereeing the game and clarify IRB Game issue protocols concerning the ‘ruck’ and ‘tackle’ areas.

The media session follows on from a series of seminars in the four provinces aimed at coaches at all levels which took place in July.

There has also been an ongoing education process for referees and coaches through the network of development officers in the four provincial branches.

Information on the ELVs including detailed descriptions, clarifications, downloads and videos are available on the IRFU website – www.irishrugby.ie/elv
