Greystones To Host End-of-Season Midweek Blitz

To celebrate the end of their 2008 Budweiser Tag season, Greystones RFC are hosting a midweek Blitz this Wednesday 30th July. It will be the start of something big and from hereon in shall be known as ‘T-Day’!

Starting at around 7pm, there will be a mini-Blitz held at Greystones this week.

There will be BBQ food and drinks available on the night with a Trophy presentation afterwards at which everyone can toast the great 2008 summer had at this fine venue and pride of Wicklow.

Stephen Keating,  Budweiser Tag venue manager at Greystones RFC:

Greystones R.F.C. has had an eventful Summer of Tag Rugby. Still in its infancy we have a number of veteran teams that are backing Greystones R.F.C. as a Tag venue now and for the future.  Taggle Rock (Simon Evans) and Bray Barbarians (Connal Doyle) are in the process of being inducted into the ‘Taggers Hall of Fame’ for their contribution to the Greystones setup!
Stalwarts from Greystones Junior Section have also decided to give Tag a go.  Ex-Senior XV Captain and Greystones Director of Rugby Liam Murphy has even bought a new set of boots and relaunched his career with Ruairi O’Hanlon’s team the Burger Kings. They have been bitten by the bug.

An invitation to the Lads and we now have a solid foundation for a number of teams next year.  With that, the Ladies have made their presence felt this year.  Fionnuala Gleeson has been building a girls team this year in Greystones R.F.C. and the Mixed Social Tag has benefitted greatly from their involvement.  The ‘Kings’ top it off …a team of misfits represented by Shane McKenna… superbly honed athletes that are preparing for the ‘King of Greystones’ Triathalon.

To bring things to a head and to identify the best Taggers in Wicklow we have decided to host a Blitz.  Not only a Greystones Blitz … but a Greystones vs Rathdrum Blitz. Rathdrum have been running with Tag for the past few years and Leinster Referee Pat ‘The Power’ Dempsey introduced me to Rathdrums Co-ordinator Dave ‘Foxey’ Fox. Thereafter, things got out of hand and we now have a dual between two fine Clubs. There will be food and refreshments. The IRFU have commissioned a number of trophies that will be fought for on Wednesday 30th July.  Twelve teams will compete for the coveted trophy.  This day will be known as ‘T-Day’ from now on and for evermore!
