The Ireland Under-20s cut loose in their final match at the IRB Junior World Championship in Newport on Sunday, running in five tries to defeat Scotland 39-12 and gain a ninth place finish in the inaugural Under-20 tournament. Read on for post-match reaction from Kieran Essex and Eric Elwood.

Number 8 Kieran Essex was man-of-the-match in the Ireland Under-20s’ 39-12 play-off win over Scotland. He said afterwards: “We showed what we can do when we get ball in hand. It was very open game. (Winning the award) is a good way to end the tournament and underage rugby for me.”

Commenting on his side’s triumph over Scotland in Newport, Ireland Under-20 coach Eric Elwood said: “We’ve won our last three games, it’s a nice way to finish what has been a long, tough tournament. Although we failed to convert some opportunities, you have to be happy with 39 points.”
