Ulster centre Andrew Trimble will sit out Ireland’s upcoming tour to New Zealand and Australia as a niggling leg injury requires him to undergo a rehabilitation programme.
Trimble, who made his debut against Australia in November 2005, is the second first choice back to be ruled out of the tour – Leinster centre Gordon D’Arcy remains sidelined after undergoing further surgery on his broken arm.
The pair will miss the Test matches against New Zealand (June 7) and Australia (June 14).
An Ulster spokeswoman confirmed: “Andrew has been carrying groin and knee injuries since the World Cup and will be rested.
“The injury needs managing so it’s been decided that he will undertake a period of rehabilitation during the summer.”
Trimble has had a busy season, playing 18 times for Ulster (4 tries) and and nine times for Ireland (3 tries) between friendly matches, the World Cup and the Six Nations.
