McCarthy Banned For Four Weeks

Connacht flanker Michael McCarthy has been handed a four-week suspension, after he was cited for a dangerous tackle during the province’s 38-8 Magners League defeat to Edinburgh at Murrayfield last Friday.

An IRFU disciplinary hearing was held in Dublin on Tuesday evening to consider a citing against Michael McCarthy for an alleged dangerous and high tackle during the Edinburgh v Connacht Magners League match.

After considering all of the available evidence, the IRFU disciplinary panel found the player guilty of the offence and suspended the player for four weeks. The suspension will expire at midnight on Friday, April 18.

The incident occurred late on in the game. McCarthy was seen to catch Nick De Luca with a dangerously high tackle which left the Edinburgh centre with a bloodied face and needing several minutes of treatment.

Match referee James Jones reacted by giving the Scottish side a penalty but there was no card for the Connacht man, which clearly annoyed the Edinburgh management team and the majority of the 2,506-strong crowd.

Connacht prop Robbie Morris and Edinburgh centre Ben Cairns were sin-binned earlier in the game in separate incidents.

After seeing out his ban, the 26-year-old McCarthy will be available for selection again for Connacht’s final two home matches of the season, at home to Cardiff and the Ospreys.
