50 Not Out For Lewis

In just over a week’s time, Cork-born Alan Lewis will become the first referee to take charge of 50 Heineken Cup matches when he controls the Round 6 clash between Glasgow Warriors and Saracens at Firhill.

Friday week’s game at Firhill will see Lewis make history by notching up his half-century. The former international cricketer is taking charge of the Round 5 meeting of the Ospreys and Gloucester at Liberty Stadium this Saturday.

Lewis, who refereed at the recent World Cup, was in charge of last season’s Heineken Cup final at Twickenham between Leicester Tigers and London Wasps.

He is currently ahead of world class referees like Chris White (45 appearances), Joel Jutge (42) and his countryman Alain Rolland (39) in the list of the Heineken Cup’s leading referees.

The 43-year-old also refereed the European Challenge Cup finals in both 2002 and 2005 and had his busiest season on the European circuit in 2006/07 when he took charge of eight matches in the Heineken Cup.
