Munster and Ireland number eight Anthony Foley made his way to the grounds of Clanwilliam RFC on Friday to take the Tipperary club’s first team squad for a training session which was set up by RBS, the sponsors of the Six Nations championship.
Earlier this year Clanwilliam’s website www.ClanRugby.ie linked to the RBS Six Nations website and the Munster Junior League club was rewarded with a training session with an Irish International.
Clan’s first team players were delighted that Foley, the man who lifted the Heineken Cup for Munster last year, took time out to pass on his expertise – both on the pitch and off it as he also took part in a question-and-answer session in the clubhouse and signed countless autographs for the local children.
The Heineken Cup’s most-capped player received an honorary life membership from Clanwilliam and one of his Munster team-mates, Alan Quinlan, Clanwilliam’s most famous player, also helped out with the training.
Although the Clanwilliam clubmen clearly gained a lot from Foley and Quinlan’s coaching, it may take another week or two for an improvement on the playing pitch as the Tipp side lost 34-0 to Richmond in the Munster Junior League on Sunday.
Clan currently lie second-from-bottom in Division One of the league but with the campaign running until early March, they certainly have time on their side to turn things around.
