Garryowen To Be Honoured By Limerick County Council

Garryowen FC, the winners of last season’s AIB League Division One, AIB Cup, Munster Senior Cup and Munster Junior Cup, are to be honoured by Limerick County Council at a civic reception next Monday at the County Hall in Dooradoyle.

The tribute follows a spectular 2006/07 season during which the Dooradoyle-based club won an unprecedented Grand Slam, picking up with the AIB League Division One and AIB Cup titles and also lifting the Munster Senior and Junior Cups.

Cllr. Kevin Sheahan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, said: “The Council is delighted to officially recognise Garryowen FC’s record achievement in being the first club to win the Munster Senior Cup, Munster Junior Cup, AIB Cup and AIB League Division One in a single season. A civic reception is the highest accolade at the disposal of Limerick County Council for any individual, group or organisation.”

Cllr. Sheahan paid tribute to Garryowen’s contribution to rugby and the part played by the club in profiting Limerick’s proud sporting tradition at national level.

“Garryowen’s 2006/07 senior team included no fewer than 11 players from the club’s Rugby Academy, which is a testament to Limerick rugby and the club’s role in developing the best in young talent,” he added.

Commenting ahead of the civic reception, Garryowen PRO Christy Barry said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be honoured by Limerick County Council. With the new season due to start next month, the civic reception is sure to inspire the current squad and management team.

“The management, players and supporters are a credit to this club and continue to be wonderful ambassadors for Limerick. It was a fantastic season for us last year and we are delighted that we brought such success and a positive profile to Limerick.”

The civic reception will take place in the County Hall at 4.30pm on Monday.
