A superb defensive effort from Connacht saw them take plenty of encouragement from Tuesday’s 18-3 defeat to South Africa at the packed-out Sportsground. See below for a photo gallery link.

A second half penalty from Andy Dunne reduced the deficit to 8-3 for Connacht but a late rally, which included a Jacques Cronje try, saw the Springboks stretch ahead.

Speaking afterwards, Connacht coach Michael Bradley said: “There were a lot of positives for us. We are only starting our season, they obviously are close to peaking (for the World Cup) so we are happy enough with the way we performed.

“Inevitably at this time of year you will always feel there are areas for improvement but this gives us a good platform to push on from here.”
