Ulster lock Justin Harrison is to have surgery on his left knee on Friday, with the procedure set to sideline the former Wallaby for up to six weeks.
Harrison is set to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. An arthroscopic procedure is where a surgeon uses a camera to look inside the joint and it is used commonly on the knee.
The 33-year-old, who has played 51 times for Ulster, has been experiencing episodes of knee joint pain during the province’s pre-season training programme.
Friday’s routine procedure in Belfast should determine the source of the problem.
Ulster physio Gareth Robinson is hopeful that Harrison, who stood in for Simon Best as captain when Ulster won the Celtic League title in 2006, will be back in training within four to six weeks.
Ulster kickstart their 2007/08 season with back-to-back friendlies against Leeds (August 31) and Gloucester (September 8) at Ravenhill.
