Matchday Live On IrishRugby.ie

A try from debutant Brian Carney and a penalty try were not enough for Ireland as they fell to a 22-20 defeat to Argentina, who pinched the win with a late Felipe Contepomi drop goal. See below for highlights from our Matchday Live service.

Ireland’s first Test of the summer tour took place tonight in Santa Fe and for many of the team it was a crunch game as they bid for places in coach Eddie O’Sullivan’s World Cup squad.

Despite leading for most of the game, Ireland went down 22-20 with Leinster’s Felipe Contepomi angling over the match-winning drop goal for the hosts. But there were plenty of plusses for the tourists – Munster winger Brian Carney marked his debut with an early intercept try, and Jerry Flannery and Jamie Heaslip were among a number of forwards to impress.

A second half penalty try from a strong Irish maul helped O’Sullivan’s side go 17-9 in front, but a loss of discipline cost them position and points, allowing Argentina back into the game and to stay in touch.

Match highlights and a score tracker were available for the first Test on our Matchday Live service.

IrishRugby.ie and O2 are delighted to present MatchDayLive for Ireland in Argentina.
