AIB League: Division Two Round-Up

Old Belvedere maintained their five-point lead at the top of the Division Two table with a 37-19 defeat of Barnhall at Anglesea Road.

Belvo claimed their eleventh straight league win by running six tries past the Kildare men, including one from winger Kevin Barden who was grabbing his eleventh try of the season.

Just ahead of him in the scoring charts is Greystones’ Ronan Carroll who scored his twelfth touchdown of the campaign in the Wicklow side’s 56-10 demolition of Malone. Full-back David McKechnie also scored, taking his all-time league try tally to 47 in five seasons.

Bective Rangers overpowered Suttonians – running out 44-15 winners – to ease their relegation worries by moving up to eleventh in the standings. Bective out-half Fergal Campion landed five conversions and three penalties for a 19-point personal haul.

Hooker Matt Crockett, one of the 28 players hoping to make the Irish club international squad for next Friday’s clash with England Counties, scored one of Dublin University’s four tries in their 30-8 victory at County Carlow.

Young Munster and Clonakilty shared the spoils in a 10-10 draw at Tom Clifford Park, with prop Alan Cotter touching down for the hosts and flanker Tadhg Wright grabbing Clon’s only try.

At Rosbrien, Old Crescent proved too strong for Highfield, leapfrogging them into eighth, as full-back Brian Begley notched a try and three conversions in their 38-5 success.

There was some light at the end of the tunnel for Midleton at home to fellow strugglers DLSP, as they ended their seven-match losing streak in the league. Kiwi Tyrone Taiepa kicked 11 points in their 21-17 defeat of ‘Salmo.

Out-half Declan Cusack turned in a man of the match display as he converted James Ryan’s try and kicked two penalties and two drop goals to steer Thomond to a 19-17 win over promotion hopefuls UCC.
