Connacht Rugby have been dealt a sizeable blow with the news that their Australian-born out-half Paul Warwick is to join Munster at the end of the current season.
The 26-year-old Warwick has made a total of 65 appearances to date for Connacht, since he joined the westerners on a one-year deal from Manly in 2004.
His splendid haul of 97 points saw him rise to the top of the European Challenge Cup scoring charts in his debut season and led to a two-year contract extension.
Having been capped at Under-21 level, he went on to captain Australia’s Sevens side and those appearances at Sevens level have ruled him ineligible to play for Ireland.
Warwick has been Connacht’s top scorer for the past few seasons, with 239 points in 46 Magners League games and 157 points in 19 outings in the Challenge Cup.
Reacting to the news, Connacht CEO Gerry Kelly said he was obviously disappointed that Warwick was moving on.
“He was very much part of our plans going forward, as he has been central to our side since we brought him over from Australia almost three years ago.
“We wish him well in his career but we are disappointed that he is leaving Connacht at this stage,” Kelly admitted.
