Injury Update: O’Driscoll “In Contention” For French Game

A scan on Monday afternoon confirmed a mild strain to Brian O’Driscoll’s right hamstring. The injury is not as serious as first feared and the Irish captain remains in contention for selection for Sunday’s Six Nations encounter with France.

O’Driscoll, who was forced off with the injury late in the 19-9 win over Wales, will go through a rehabilitation programme in Ireland with the team’s medical staff this week.

A further medical update regarding the injury will be made on Saturday.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Irish scrum half Peter Stringer has suffered a hairline break to a metacarpal in his right hand. The injury will prevent Stringer from training in the early part of this week, but he has not been ruled out of the eagerly awaited clash with France at Croke Park.

A further medical update on the Munster player will be made on Friday.

O’Driscoll’s centre partner Gordon D’Arcy suffered a groin strain during the early stages of the win over Wales. The injury has responded well to treatment in the past 24 hours. He will also undergo a rehabilitation programme this week and is expected to be available for selection against France.

Number 8 Denis Leamy had an abscess incised and drained on Monday and will take part in limited training this week, but is not considered a doubt for the Croke Park tie, at this time.

The Irish team announcement will be made tomorrow afternoon, as well as confirmation of the Ireland ‘A’ line-up for Friday’s meeting with England Saxons at Ravenhill. The following ten players have been brought into the Irish senior squad as cover:

Forwards – Bryan Young (Ulster), Malcolm O’Kelly (Leinster), Jamie Heaslip (Leinster), Keith Gleeson (Leinster) and Trevor Hogan (Leinster)

Backs – Tommy Bowe (Ulster), Rob Kearney (Leinster), Barry Murphy (Munster), Kieran Lewis (Leinster) and Eoin Reddan (Wasps)
