Ireland Squad – Injury Update

The Ireland squad assembled in Dublin to begin preparations for the RBS 6 Nations campaign but the weekend action in the Heineken Cup has take its toll.

Shane Horgan (Knee), Robert Kearney (hamstring strain) and John Kelly (Ribs) have pulled out of the Ireland Rugby squad due to injury and have been replaced by Danny Riordan (Connacht) (pictured right), Kieran Lewis (Leinster) and David Quinlan (Northampton).

In addition to this, there are fifteen players unable to train today due to minor injuries or having played yesterday, so today’s scheduled training session has been cancelled.

Shane Horgan underwent surgery yesterday on his cartilage injury and the recovery period for his injury is 4-6 weeks.  Malcolm O’Kelly, who came off on Friday with a recurrence of a previous knee problem, will be further assessed by the medical team today.

Barry Murphy, Peter Stringer, Gordon D’Arcy, Mick O’Driscoll and David Wallace are unable to train due to minor injuries.

Simon Easterby, David Quinlan, Neil Best, Rory Best, Simon Best, Bryan Young, Andrew Trimble, Tommy Bowe and Paddy Wallace all played yesterday and will rehab today.

Ireland Coach Eddie O’Sullivan said, “The squad have picked up a couple of knocks at the weekend following the Heineken Cup games and we also have to be mindful of players who have played yesterday.  It was in the best interests of the players to prioritise rehab and recovery today to allow us to hit the ground running tomorrow”.
