Ireland lock Paul O’Connell has been chosen to succeed Anthony Foley as Munster’s captain for the 2006/07 season.

The 26-year-old O’Connell, who previously skippered Ireland against France (2004) and Scotland (2005), takes over from Foley who has been in charge for the past two seasons and famously lifted the Heineken Cup last May.

Both Foley and out-half Ronan O’Gara will operate as the province’s vice captains this season.

Speaking at the launch of the Sunday’s Well RFC centenary book on Monday, O’Connell said: “Anthony has been fantastic in everything he has done over the last few years. It’s a transitional period. We have spoken about it, he is in support of the decision and I am happy to take over.

“We have loads of players coming through the system and it’s a question of looking after new guys coming through. Anthony will be of huge benefit, helping me through the next couple of months and it’s magnificent that I know the support is there in full.”

Meanwhile, Munster are expected to have most of their Irish international contingent available for selection for Saturday’s Magners League clash with Ulster (Musgrave Park, 7.30pm).

Those no available include prop John Hayes, who injured an ankle at his home, and back row Denis Leamy, who picked up a hamstring injury during Ireland’s mini training camp last week.
