Stranmillis College is set to be home to eleven of the 24 competing teams at the 2007 IRB Under-19 World Championship in Belfast.
The tournament, which will run from April 4 to 21 next year, will see the cream of world rugby’s underage talent converge on Belfast with more than 700 players, 250 coaches and officials and thousands of fans set to travel.
300 of those players will be based at Stranmillis College in south Belfast – in a players’ village-style setting – for the duration of the tournament. The IRB’s headquarters will also be at Stranmillis, from where there is easy access to the main tournament venues of Ravenhill, Deramore Park, Shaw’s Bridge, Gibson Park and The Dub.
Ulster Branch CEO Michael Reid told the Belfast Telegraph: “The wheels are really in motion for what is going to be a tremendously exciting event for Belfast.
“Stranmillis College will be turned into an Olympic-style athletes village and there should be a great buzz to that area and the city.”
The remaining 13 teams are set to be based in hotels around Belfast city.
The 2007 IRB U-19 World Championship is only the third ‘world’ championship to be held in Belfast after the World Cross Country Championships (1999) and the World Amateur Boxing Championships (2001).
