Following a hernia operation, London Wasps and Ireland out-half Jeremy Staunton is edging his way back to full fitness.

The Limerick man underwent the surgery after Ireland’s summer tour to New Zealand and Australia, during which he took his Test caps tally to four.

According to Wasps head physio Roger Knibbs, Staunton is “making excellent progress” with his rehab, and is expected to be fit for the Londoners’ Guinness Premiership opener against Saracens on Saturday.

Scrum half Eoin Reddan, who missed the tour Down Under due to a groin injury, is back in action and was a substitute in Wasps’ 49-14 friendly win over Border Reivers last Friday. His former Connacht team mate Peter Bracken started and played the full game at tighthead prop.

Meanwhile, Wasps’ Ireland flanker Johnny O’Connor, another ex-Connacht player, is continuing to work his way back from the neck injury he picked up in last season’s Powergen Cup final. The 26-year-old is “progressing well, but is yet to do contact training.”
