IRB Highlight Padding Law

The International Rugby Board (IRB) have notified all Rugby Unions of the need to enforce the Law in relation to padding.

The International Rugby Board (IRB) have requested Law 4/Regulation 12 is rigorously enforced. Notice has been sent to all Rugby Unions accordingly. The IRFU would like to draw the attention of all players and officials to this law.

Particular attention is drawn to the use of padding on players’ legs to assist line-out lifting – this padding must not be in excess of 0.5cm. This effectively prevents the use of ‘handles’ built into padding above the jumpers’ knees.

Padding on the forearms must also be no thicker than 0.5cm.

It is important that teams are aware of the above and comply accordingly. Referees will check such padding prior to matches.
