After undergoing a shoulder operation in Dublin on Friday, Leinster and Ireland centre Gordon D’Arcy is expected to return to action in October.

The 26-year-old Wexford man had what Ireland coach Eddie O’Sullivan described as a ‘clean-up’ op on his shoulder. He is expected to be back fit and available for the November Test matches against South Africa, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

D’Arcy’s international colleague Jerry Flannery, who also went under the knife on Friday to repair a shoulder injury, is set for a four-month lay-off.

Flannery’s sidelining means that fit-again hooker Frankie Sheahan, whose last campaign was wrecked by a neck injury, could be pressed into immediate action by Munster when the new season begins.

Members of the Irish squad are currently in Spala, Poland at a pre-season training camp.
