Ulster speedster Andrew Maxwell will make his second start of the Barclays Churchill Cup when Ireland ‘A’ clash with the England Saxons in Saturday’s Plate final.

Maxwell, a Sevens international, has claimed the right wing berth, which was originally left vacant by the Irish management owing to injuries. He scored a try on his debut for Ireland ‘A’ in the 28-13 win over the USA on June 3.

The playing squad and management arrived in the Canadian city of Edmonton, the venue for the the tournament finals, on Monday. Team manager Joey Miles reports that temperatures are four to five degrees cooler than in San Jose, which is some relief.

The players trained yesterday at the Lep/Tigers rugby club close to the hotel. The game against the Saxons is a ‘consolation’ play-off as both sides finished second in their respective pools. The Pool A winners Scotland ‘A’ and the New Zealand Maori, who topped Pool B, will clash in the Cup final at the Commonwealth Stadium (kick-off 9.30pm Irish time).

The Ireland ‘A’ v England Saxons game kicks off at 7.00pm Irish time on Saturday. The Bowl final between hosts Canada and the USA gets underway at 11.30pm. All three encounters are live on Sky Sports 1 and IrishRugby.ie will be running a live match tracker for the Plate final.

Miles added: “The selection of the replacements bench was delayed due to a number of players currently being treated for injuries. All of the panel with the exception of Rob Kearney and Kieran Lewis (both injured), and Roger Wilson (suspended) were available for selection.

“The squad travelled up to Edmonton minus Rob and Kieran, who have both returned home.”
