Ireland flanker Johnny O’Connor, who was used as a replacement in last weekend’s Triple Crown triumph over England, will play for London Wasps for another two years after penning a new contract.

The Galway man, who ventured across the water from Connacht in 2003, is one of five players – including World Cup winners Josh Lewsey and Joe Worsley – who have agreed new deals with the reigning Guinness Premiership champions.

O’Connor, who racked up his 12th Test cap for Ireland last Saturday at Twickenham, has seen his career blossom since joining Wasps. Having ousted Paul Volley to become the club’s first choice number 7 in his first season, the 26-year-old, who is nicknamed “Johnny Concrete”, made his Irish debut against South Africa the following season (November 2004).

Ending the speculation about a possible move back to his home land, O’Connor told the Wasps website: “It was a simple decision to make – if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. I enjoy being at Wasps, it’s a great environment to work in and I get on very well with the other players in the squad. The coaching’s top class and there’s still a lot for me to learn here. I’m enjoying my time at Wasps and though I will go home eventually, I’m not ready to go yet.”
