Sale Sharks centre Epi Taione has been cited for allegedly biting Munster’s Denis Leamy during the course of Saturday’s Heineken Cup Pool One clash at Thomond Park.

The Tongan international, nicknamed ‘Banger’, has been asked to appear before an independent disciplinary committee after being cited by the ERC. Citing commissioner Iain Goodall reported the incident and Taione’s case will be heard as soon as the disciplinary committee can meet.

Taione, standing at 6ft 4in and weighing in at over 18 stone, came on as a replacement for injured centre Elvis Seveali’i after 26 minutes of Saturday’s tie, but he was shifted into the Sale pack in the closing quarter after Chris Jones was substituted.

Taione, 26, was also fortunate to receive only a talking to from referee Joel Jutge in the first half when he caught Munster lock Paul O’Connell with a high arm tackle.
