First try: Andrew Trimble being congratulated by his Ulster and Ireland colleague Neil Best

Ulster centre Andrew Trimble has received a vote of confidence from irishrugby.ie users – the 21-year-old has topped our poll to find out who was Ireland’s player of the autumn International series.

The Theology student had some tough competition from Munster man Denis Leamy, whose switching to number 8 against New Zealand, Australia and Romania proved an undoubted success. Wasps flanker Johnny O’Connor, who crowned his tenth Test cap in the win against Romania with a try, was also an early poll leader, but faded in the final furlong.

Trimble’s brace of tries in his man-of-the-match performance against the Romanians surely swung it for the current golden boy of Ulster rugby.

Has he played his way into squad contention for the Six Nations? We will have to wait and see, but two caps earned, and it’s certainly an impressive start from the Coleraine youngster.

We asked you: “Who was Ireland’s player of the autumn International series?”

3242 votes were received, with the final result being: Andrew Trimble (38%, 1238 votes), Denis Leamy (34%, 1116), Johnny O’Connor (13%, 423), Gordon D’Arcy (7%, 235) and Marcus Horan (7%, 230).
