Nenagh are still placed fifth after losing their unbeaten record. They are one of three Munster clubs, headed by leaders Clonakilty, inside the top five.
Fly-half Gary Cribb scored all of Clonakilty’s points – a try, conversion and penalty – in their 10-3 home defeat of Skerries on Saturday. The Cork side’s fourth straight win of the season saw them push three points clear of chief chasers Bruff ahead of the international break.
Limerick outfit Bruff lost ground in the title race, losing 22-14 away to Connemara. The Galway side’s fly-half Alan King effectively decided the match, kicking five penalties and converting a try from Kiwi Sam Eckhoff.
The win was Connemara’s second in seven days and it sent them tenth in the table.
It was an encouraging weekend for Galway clubs as Corinthians moved from sixth place to third thanks to a four-try 31-17 success at home to Ards.
Centre Richard Forbes scored the first touchdown after only two minutes. The second followed in first half injury-time as Connacht player Dan Riordan, playing at full-back, crossed the northerners’ whitewash.
The second half was just two minutes old when Julian Leonard bagged Corinthians’ third try, which he converted himself, but that effort was followed on 55 minutes by Ards’ only try from fly-half Stewart Paul. Corinthians winger James Buckley made certain of the home win on 78 minutes when he raced in for a fourth try.
Banbridge, meanwhile, climbed up to eight as they secured their second straight win – beating Old Wesley 21-9 at Rifle Park. The ‘Bridge tries were all scored in the first half through left winger Claude Crawford, centre Alan Gibson and full-back Ritchie Coburn.
Wesley’s points came from three penalties from number 10 David Smith.
At Chambers Park, Suttonians’ Walsh brothers, winger Joe and fly-half David, almost single-handedly beat beleaguered Portadown 40-20.
The Walshes scored 25 points between them – Joe scored a try, two penalties and a conversion, while David grabbed two tries and a conversion to help the Dubliners up to sixth in the standings.
Prop Geoff Caldwell’s try initially had the Ports in the lead, but Division Three’s bottom side sat back and allowed Suttonians to dominate.
Tries from lock Thomas Anderson and right winger Blair Clements, allied to full-back John Neely’s brace of penalties, saw Queen’s University earn their first win of the current league campaign at the fourth attempt – a 16-10 victory against fellow strugglers City of Derry.
