Colm McMahon, the newly-appointed captain of AIB League Division One champions Shannon, will be sidelined for 6-8 weeks after breaking a bone in his foot.

The 28-year-old flanker sustained the injury after 12 minutes of Shannon’s league opener at St Mary’s College last Saturday. A bitter pill to swallow in his first league game as skipper, it has been confirmed that McMahon, a one-time Munster squad member, will be out for a considerable time.

McMahon, who made 14 Celtic League appearances for his province between 2001 and 2004, is certain to miss Shannon’s league dates with Galwegians, Dublin University and UL Bohs over the next three weekends.

It also seems unlikely that McMahon will play a part in the Limerick giants’ crucial December meetings with Dungannon and Ballymena.

Shannon coach Mick Galwey has another of his talented back row forwards in the injury bay – John O’Connor injured his back in the second half of the 42-13 victory at Mary’s, but is making a good recovery and could feature against ‘Wegians this Saturday.

Meanwhile, there is good news for former Ireland international Eddie Halvey, who is back in contention for a starting spot after a spell out with a back injury.
