Two days after his provincial swansong, Leinster and Ireland stalwart Victor Costello has picked up the Bank of Scotland (Ireland) Leinster Player Of The Month award for April.

The 34-year-old number 8 played 72 minutes of last Sunday’s Celtic Cup semi-final clash with provincial rivals Munster, helping his side to a 17-16 lead before his opposite number Anthony Foley lurched over for a late converted try.

Costello, who came on as a second half replacement in his final Heineken Cup game against Leicester in early April, starred in Leinster’s two Celtic wins over Glasgow in the latter part of the month.

The St Mary’s powerhouse scored his fifth Celtic try in Leinster’s 33-24 Cup quarter-final win over the Scots at Lansdowne Road, just over two weeks ago.

As well as the well-earned recognition of the supporters for this award, Costello received a specially commissioned trophy before the start of their headquarters semi against Munster – his final game of an eleven-year career.
