IRFU announces new league format

The IRFU has decided that the AIB League will comprise of three Divisions of 16 teams, divided into two equally balanced sections playing each other home and away.

The Irish Rugby Football Union, as its meeting today, decided that the AIB League, commencing in season 2005 – 06, shall comprise three Divisions of 16 teams, divided into equally balanced sections of eight and playing each other home and away.

This format reflects the views of the Branches and the clubs as expressed to the Union through the AIB All Ireland League Working Party.

Further consultation will take place shortly to determine the method of achieving the new format.

The IRFU has also discussed the introduction of an All Ireland Cup and approved its inauguration for next season, 2005 – 06. The format and scheduling will be developed over the coming months.
