Sir Clive Woodward has made initial contact with Ian McGeechan, that most experienced of Lions coaches, with a view to enlisting his coaching skills for the tour to New Zealand.

However, McGeechan’s employers, the Scottish Rugby Union would have to sanction a temporary release from his position. McGeechan is currently employed to promote the game of rugby in Scotland as Director of Rugby.

“There is informal dialogue at the moment but no decision has been taken,” said a SRU spokesperson.

McGeechan’s Lions credentials are undisputed, having been Coach to three tours. His first stint was in Australia (2-1 series win) in 1989, before taking on New Zealand (2-1 series defeat) in 1993 and finally, then World Champions South Africa (2-1 series win) in 1997.
