Ireland and Ulster out half David Humphreys was today (Thursday) named as the Guinness
Draught Can Irish Celtic League Player of the Month for December.

Ireland’s
most capped fly half returned from the World Cup in Australia and
slotted
back into the Ulster team to help continue the provinces success that
saw
them lift the Celtic Cup in December.

Ulster’s form had already seen them top the Celtic League when they
travelled to Murrayfield to take on highflying Edinburgh in their
hometown
stadium in front of over 17,000 fans. Ulster raced into a 21-0 lead
with
tries from Neil Best and Rowen Frost after Humphreys had
settled early
nerves with two penalties on his way to a 17-point haul.

After the break, Edinburgh staged a fight back that saw them score two
converted tries before Humphreys again calmed Ulster nerves with his
third
penalty goal. Edinburgh came back again to score a converted try to
put the
result in doubt, but Humphreys put the nail in the Edinburgh coffin
with his
fourth penalty goal to secure a 21-27 win.

Humphreys calm leadership and superb kicking kept Ulster moving
forward when
Edinburgh began to dominate play and it was this man of the match
performance that sees him voted the player of the month for December.

Ronan Beirne, Guinness Brand Manager commented, As Official Beer to
Celtic
Rugby, Guinness Draught Can is delighted to present this award to an
Ulster
and Ireland legend. Ulster’s form in the Celtic league has been
outstanding
and with some silverware already secured with their Celtic Cup win,
we wish
both them and David the best of luck for the rest of the campaign.
