Gloucester’s Henry Paul kicked 17 points and set up a second-half try for James
Simpson-Daniel as Gloucester gained revenge for last season’s nightmare.

Munster fought hard but in the end the Cherry and Whites were just too strong.

Connacht got the worst possible start when a lively Pau took an early lead
with the try from No. 14 Rio Jaouher which was converted by David Aucaugnes
for a 7-0 lead. But Connacht refused to panic and two penalties from out-half
Dave Hewitt soon had them back in touch.

Then a super break by lock Mike McCarthy was eventually finished off by Mike
Swift in the opposite left corner, and when Dan MCFarland scored a second try
on 33 minutes, Connacht had a 16-7 interval lead.

Connacht produced a superb second-half performance. Early pressure gave Hewitt
another penalty. A superb pack saw their exciting No. 8 John O’Sullivan
score on 58 minutes to stretch the lead to 24-7. Eric Elwood, who started on
the bench with Michael Bradley’s rotation policy, came on for the last
30 minutes and provided a hugely steadying influence on proceedings. Then on
80 minutes sub scrum-half Conor O’Loughlin made a scintillating break from
his own half and set up full-back Matt Mostyn who darted over for the try of
the game.
