A drop-goal from the best out-half on the planet, Jonny Wilkinson, at the end of the second period of extra-time gave England a 20-17 victory over Australia
in rain-swept Sydney today.

England led 14-5 at half-time thanks to three Wilkinson penalties and a try from Jason Robinson, the pass from Wilkinson.

Then with the wind and rain at their backs Australia clawed their way back with three Elton Flatley penalties, the equlaiser on the stroke of full-time.

Wilkinson edged England in front with a superb long-range effort at the start of added-time, Flatley tied it up again late in the second period but Wilkinson had the final say, his first successful drop-goal goal from four efforts giving England the Webb Ellis trophy.
