Tries from Peter Stringer and John Kelly gave Ireland a 18-3 lead at half time in the Stadio Flaminio this afternoon.

In ideal conditions, Ireland went into the lead in the 17th minute when Stringer scored following a drive by Victor Costello.
David Humphreys added a good conversion and penalty seven minutes later to push ireland 10 points clear.

The third try came in the 3oth minute when Keith Gleeson did well to pass out of the tackle to John Kelly who skipped over.

Diego Dominguez opened Italy’s account with atap over in the 33rd minute, a score that was negated by an equally easy kick from Humphreys in the closing stages of the half. Dominguez was wide with an injury time effort and Reggie Corrigan departed the scene (injured) as referee Tony Spreadbury sounded the half time whistle.

Half-time: Italy 3-18 Ireland.
