Leinster wound up their pool section in the Heineken Cup with a hugely impressive 25-12 victory over Bristol Shoguns in the Memorial Stadium and will now face Biarritz in the quarter-final. It was a cracking game of football played at pace for the full duration as Bristol came out with the intention of scoring a hatful of tries. They went into the game with an outside chance of qualification and they ran ball from every part of the field at every opportunity. They failed in their desired objective because Leinster’s defence was quite superb and they lost the game because almost every time Leinster visited their 22 they came away with a score.

Leinster scored three first half tries, from Aiden McCullen, Brian O’Driscoll and Shane Horgan and they led 17-12 at the break.

Bristol tried everything in the second half to break down the Leinster defence and although it creaked a few times it never cracked. Bristol were reduced to 14 in the 63rd minute when Felipe Contepomi was yellow-carded and from the penalty award Brian O’Meara put his side two scores clear (20-12).
In the closing stages Leinster again soaked up a welter of pressure and when they broke out, McCullen was on hand out wide to crash over for his second try.
