The reference to the ‘old’ came from the fact that Thomond had nine players in their side who once played for Young Munster. Three of them Aidan O’Halloran, Ger Earls and Niall McNamara all played a drucial role in Young Munster’s famous AIL League win over St Mary’s in Lansdowne Road some years back and last Saturday they were the driving force behind Thomnond’s win. O’Halloran kicked three penalties and three drop-goals and McNamara scored a try to leave Thomond just one point behind their great rivals in the league table.
Dolphin return to the top of the table thanks to their 18-12 win over UCC at The Mardyke and Old Crescent’s surprise 33-14 hammering by Sunday’s Well at Musgrave Park.
Midleton continued the good form of Cork clubs with an impressive 27-8 win away to Portadown.
Greystones and Dublin University look set for a quick return to Division Three. They occupy the last two places in the table -separated by a point after defeats in Barnhall and DLSP, respectively.
The students might take some consolation and encouragement from their narrow 16-13 defeat but Greystones looked way off the pace when they were beaten 38-15 in Parsonstown.
