It’s being reported in the media that Great Britain full back Gary Connolly is interested in playing for Ireland in the Rugby World Cup next year. Connolly will pull the curtain down on an illustrious Rugby League career when he lines up against New Zealand on Saturday night, and the Wigan star hopes to say farewell by lifting The Albert Baskerville Shield.

The 31-year-old former St Helens player ironically began his career at full back before becoming one of the most feared centres in the game during an 11-year international career which began in Wigan against Papua New Guinea in 1991. Qualified to play for Ireland his grandparents, Connolly who joins Orrell after finishing with League, said that he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of playing for Ireland in union in the next World Cup.

“I’ve got some time off after I leave here, I don’t know if it’s a week or two, and then it’s up to the (Orrell) coach when I make my debut,” he said. “”I qualify for Ireland and there’s always a chance of playing in the World Cup if I do well in rugby union. That’s what I will be aiming for and, if it comes, it will be something special. They’re looking for players and I said I would be interested if that came along.”
