When Connacht and Munster met earlier, the game, the opening match of the interprovincial series, was played in Musgrave Park and Connacht won 19-13.

Connacht went on to beat Leinster but subsequently lost to Ulster 33-27. However in the semi-final play-offs they reversed that defeat while Munster needed a last gasp Barry Keeshan penalty to defeat Leinster and set up this decider with the reigning champions
